Six Miles
The city of Cocoa Beach is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on its west by the Banana River Lagoon. To its north is Cape Canaveral and to the south is Patrick Space Force Base. It is six miles of barrier island along the Central Florida coast. This has been home for most of my life. I have seen here a sea-change of growth and development. The trees, the people, the buildings, the traffic, the land, they come and they go. There is no part of this barrier island that has remained untouched by human hands and nature's movements. It is, to say the least, a landscape that remains in a seemingly perpetual transition. My intention with this study is to create continuous panoramic views of the many layers of these six miles from ground level. From the north of the barrier island to its south, looking east and looking west. Views are of the beach and the sand dunes, the ocean, along SR A1A, and the spoil islands dotting the Banana River Lagoon. My interest is in documenting an extended moment in the transitory nature of this place.
The finished panoramic images begin as individual photographs. Over several days I walked the length of the city — on the beach and then along A1A — capturing images about every ten steps. The individual images are then blended together. Each individual panoramic image represents, roughly, a ¼ mile section of the city’s six-mile length. This is an on-going series with the spoil islands and river views in progress. The images have been exhibited in several forms, 96 X 7 inch panoramic prints and 55 X 4 inch panoramic prints. I have also created hand-made accordion books with book sleeves.
